Bata's Thermo socks keep feet dry and pleasantly warm in cold working conditions.
Technology > Development
Bata Industrials has set a new standard in the Safety and Health concept, and is constantly working on maintaining this high level of technological development. By investing in new materials and technologies, Bata is able to continue to respond adequately and innovatively to market developments and changing working conditions.

To achieve this goal, Bata works closely with end users, universities, prominent testing institutes, suppliers and experts, with whom it conducts scientific research on maximum safety, comfort and design. A few of our partners include the Technical University of Delft, SATRA, TNO, the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and various international chemical concerns. The results of the research are applied towards improving current products and developing new concepts.

Research and development focus on the following areas, among others:
  • Perfect fit
  • Climate management
  • Biomechanics
  • Improving the safety features of our products
  • Optimum slip resistance
  • Weight reduction
  • Special fibres in the socks for specific applications
  • Quality improvement

Double energy absorption
In accordance with the EN ISO 20344 standard, the seat region of a safety shoe must be able to absorb at least 20 joules of energy. For Bata Industrials, this is not quite high enough. The models from the collections The Natural and BS2000 are therefore equipped with an innovative sole construction which allows them to absorb shock. Official tests have shown that this new construction nearly doubles the energy absorption rate.

Sole technology
The sole technology consists of three elements: the patented Tunnelsystem, a shank and a special PU mid-sole. The combination of these ergonomic elements relieves the burden on the entire biomechanical system. These elements have even been proven to prevent symptoms and sometimes even afflictions of the knees, hips and back. This means wearers become less tired and have a lower loss of concentration, and fewer absences due to illness. Wearers who are therefore fit and healthy longer.

1. Tunnelsystem
Integrated into the outsole, the patented shock absorber consists of a smart notch in the heel. This ‘tunnel’ is located directly under the shank, in the centre of the heel. In situations involving the application of great pressure (for example, if you miss your footing on a step), this notch deforms (energy absorption). This spreads the pressure over a larger surface area, and moves it away from the foot. Thanks to this effect, the Tunnelsystem is capable of offsetting three to four times the wearer’s body weight. This alleviates the burden on the user’s joints, increases his or her stability, allowing the user to remain fit longer.

2. Shank
The anatomically formed shank supports the mid-foot, and ensures a natural movement of the foot. In addition, the shank provides permanent absorption of shock as the foot hits the ground. The shank’s positioning directly under the tarsal joint, on the heel, guarantees an optimal absorption of energy.

3. Polyurethan mid-sole

All of the shoes from Bata Industrials have a polyurethane mid-sole. This durable, high-quality material makes a significant contribution to our safety shoes’ energy absorption capabilities, even under the front of the foot.
